Burgers are an iconic symbol for American culinary tradition and are associated with all kinds of things from small barbecues to fast-food culture. The love affair between Americans and burgers is multi-dimensional. It has cultural, historical and gastronomical significance.

Ground beef patties first appeared in America towards the end of 19th century or beginning of the 20th century and these are often considered as being where the hamburger came from. The burger as we know it today became a hit during the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair when people bought it there because it was quick to eat and delicious. By 1920s, White Castle had been established; which made it become America’s most famous Fast Food joint, hence confirming that hamburgers were here to stay in American society. This affordability and simplicity allowed them to be enjoyed by many during hard economic times.
Cultural Significance
Burgers have come to represent much more than just a meal: they encapsulate American inventiveness and the fast-paced way of life that predominates in much of the country. When drive-ins started springing up all over America during the fifties, this was followed by a fast food revolution that marked its emergence as McDonald’s and Burger King launched their brands on this nation with passion for hamburgers unparalleled elsewhere else on earth.
